Asia Trail II

Asia Trail II Elephant Facility at the National Zoo

WAI provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design services for the design-build of the Asia Trail II Elephant Facility. This project was awarded via a preliminary design award competition and achieved LEED Gold accreditation. Key aspects of this project included: a large amphitheater for spectators, public restroom facilities, interpretive pavilion, view shelter, a geothermal based HVAC system, radiant heating, heated pools and sand floors, a dedicated outside air ventilation system, a 105,000 CFM animal area ventilation system with 70% effective heat recovery, light harvesting controls, operable skylights, green roof and a photovoltaic array that can provide 10% of its energy needs.
